Aku Ankan taskukirjassa (n:o 19) oli kerran tarina, jossa Aku joutui vuoteen 2000 ja huomasi Roopen kuolleen ja olevansa itse yhtä pihi kuin vanha setänsä. Kun tämä sarjakuva julkaistiin 70-luvun alussa, oli vuosituhannen vaihteeseen vielä pitkältä tuntuva aika. Alitajuisesti ihmiset liittävät vuoteen 2000 kaukana olevan tulevaisuuden ja tieteiskirjallisuuden esittämät visiot uuden vuosituhannen kehitysaskeleista. Niinpä uuden vuosituhannen alku tuntui helposti olevan kauempana mitä se todellisuudessa oli. Roope on kuitenkin edelleen elossa, eikä Blade Runneriin ole aikaa kuin reilut kymmenen vuotta - vuosi 2000 on yllättänyt meidät.
Myös Vartiotorni-seura ajatteli, että vuosituhannen vaihde on turvallisen kaukana. Vielä 1980-luvun aikana kirjallisuudessa viitattiin useita kertoja tähän aikaan ja huolimattomasti esitettiin, että maailmanloppu olisi varmasti tullut ennen tätä aikaa. Seura heräsi kuitenkin ajan vähyyteen viimeistään vuonna 1989. Saman vuoden tammikuussa oli julkaistu maininta, että saarnaamistyö saatettaisiin loppuun tämän vuosisadan aikana. Jollakulla alkoivat Brooklynissä kellot kuitenkin soida tämän kirjoituksen jälkeen. Ilmeisesti sanamuoto oli liian rohkea, koska kun englanninkielinen Vartiotornin sidottu vuosikerta julkaistiin, niin sanamuoto oli muutettu lehteen! Muutos on nähtävillä myös Seuran julkaisemalla Watchtower Library rompulla.
Tämän hetkinen virallinen näkökanta on se, että Jehovan todistajille vuodella 2000 ei ole mitään teologista merkitystä. Tämä kanta tuodaan esiin mm. Seuran www-sivuilla ja esitettiin myös Herätkää!-lehdessä 1998. Sama lehti myöntää mielenkiintoisesti sen, että todistajat ovat tavanneet ennustaa loppua, mutta epämääräistä kieltä käyttäen kiertää sen tosiasian, että Seura itse on ollut heittämässä liekkiä laineille ja sysää syyn yleisesti Jehovan todistajien vastuulle.

And Jesus has told us to rejoice at seeing the dark storm clouds of Armageddon gathering since that time. He has told us that the "generation" of 1914-the year that the sign began to be fulfilled-"will by no means pass away until all these things occur." (Matthew 24:34) Some of that "generation" could survive until the end of the century. But there are many indications that "the end" is much closer than that!
